I designed the cover and main story layout for Shifting Currents, a local magazine committed to raising awareness about endangered and mistreated ocean life. This particular issue featured an in-depth exposé on the tooth drilling of captive orcas, a harsh, invasive practice that many readers may not be aware of. Given the emotional weight and sensitivity of the topic, I approached the design with a careful balance of restraint and visual impact. For the cover, I chose to feature a cropped section of the main story’s graphic—creating a subtle but powerful visual link between the exterior and interior of the magazine. This decision helped establish a cohesive narrative and allowed the imagery to speak without overwhelming the viewer. Inside, the layout is simple, giving room for the story to breathe and for the visuals to carry emotional. weight without feeling sensationalized. I selected a simple, modern typeface to maintain clarity and readability, while also aligning with the magazine’s thoughtful and educational tone. The overall design reflects the seriousness of the subject matter, while still drawing the reader in with a sense of quiet urgency and respect for the lives being discussed.
